Eastside Carnival
Although a form of Carnival was held in St. Thomas prior to the 2nd World War it is only since 1952 has it been held in its present format and with a few exceptions has been held on a yearly basis ever since.
The organisation rested with the St. Thomas Community Centre and they were able to have a yearly event until the early 1980's when the event was not held for a few years. The 18th St. Stephens Scout Group then organised the Carnival from 1989 for a number of years. In 2005 the GSP held a Funday to gauge the support amongst the community for the return of the Carnival which was a big success. The rest as they say is history as the Annual Eastside Carnival has been held every year since 2006 and hopefully will continue for a few more generations to enjoy the event.
As well as the field activities which originally were held at Maesteg Park but are now held at Jersey Park there is The Parade which takes place prior to the opening of the field events.
The Parade starts from the bus terminus on Danygraig Road and proceeds to the event venue with residents lineing the route to give the whole event a carnival atmosphere. Vehicle floats were a big part of the parade in previous years but with various changes beyond the organisers control the inclusion of vehicles has dropped off, however the 2011 Carnival contained a couple of vehicle floats and it is hoped that more vehicle floats will participate in future years. Even though vehicles had declined we have still been lucky enough to have local bands, groups and individuals to take part in the parade.
The Carnival Queen Event is held prior to Carnival Day to select that years Carnival Queen, Rose Queen, Fairy Queen and Prince Charming along with their Attendants.
